Understanding Cremations

What to expect at Worcester Crematorium, and how we care for you and your loved one.

A note on our current services

Cremation services are paused while Worcester Crematorium is refurbished (due for completion in 2026). Your funeral director can arrange a service at a nearby crematorium. The Book of Remembrance is temporarily at Worcester Guildhall.

Service times and our chapel

Our chapel looks out onto the Garden of Solace, a calm setting for you and your family. Your funeral director will book your service and guide you through the paperwork and the choices along the way.

The cremation service

Our team are trained to the highest standards in the sector (FBCA) and will care for your loved one with dignity and respect throughout. Some families choose a religious service with hymns, some a civil service with poems and popular music, and some no service at all — we are here to make sure it is the service you want.

Once the mourners have left, the coffin is taken into the crematory and is always cremated separately, usually within a few hours. The ashes are ready for collection the following day. You are welcome to view the chapel and crematory before a service or after the cremation — just contact the office to arrange a visit.

Your loved one's ashes

Collecting ashes

Ashes can be collected by your funeral director or the applicant for cremation. Another member of the family can collect them only with the applicant's written permission.

Storage

We store ashes for one month at no charge, after which a fee applies.

Scattering

We can scatter ashes in the Garden of Remembrance at Astwood if you would like to choose this option.

Music, webcasting and flowers

Music is often an important part of a service. Your funeral director liaises with Obitus in advance, and with access to a large internet library we can play any appropriate piece that is commercially available. An electric organ is available at no extra charge, and we can record the service to CD, DVD, Blu-Ray or USB for a small fee.

Services can also be webcast live through Obitus for anyone who cannot attend, with a maximum of 100 logins per service. You can find out more at obitus.com. After the service, your funeral director places floral tributes on the wreath terrace behind the chapel, where they remain before being cleared after seven days.
